Welcome to Village Baptist Church Historic Building Fund

THE TIME IS NOW TO LET THE BELL RING AGAIN!

The Village Baptist Church has been at the heart of Kennebunkport since 1838, serving as a beacon of hope to our community for over 170 years.  The town and church are not the same without the historic VBC spire and bell.  The time has come to return them to their proper place atop the church.

History of the Village Baptist Church

The existing Village Baptist Church was built on land donated to the Kennebunkport Baptist Society by Captain Eliphet Perkins by a deed dated October 13, 1838.   Prior to that time devoted members "held conference" on Saturday and "broke bread" on Sundays in homes, in Samuel Lewis' cabinet shop, or in the "free meeting house at the wharves".  The classic Gothic Revival style church was constructed in the center of the historic sea-faring village and now sits adjacent to the Captain Richard Nott House which was constructed in 1853.

Later, a belfry tower with beautiful domed roof and weathervane pole was added.  Inside the bell tower sat a 1844 bell which was constructed by Henry Hooper and Co. in Boston, Massachusetts.  This bell rang, as many church bells of that time did, to summon the parishoners to worship, or to gather townspeople together.  These beautiful and functional buildings are an important part of New England's history and heritage, and the Village Baptist Church is wonderful example of such.
